By Rick Maze, Air Force Times

…Federal, state and local governments, and private industry have undertaken broad efforts to help separating service members find jobs, and more ideas appear every day.

On Thursday, Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., an Air Force veteran who served during the 1991 Gulf War, introduced a bill aimed at using federal authority over licensing to help more veterans get jobs. His Veterans Skills to Jobs Act, HR 4155, would require federal agencies to treat relevant military training as the equivalent of federal licensing and certification requirement, which he believes would put more veterans to work faster.

Denham’s bill would help in fields that require federally issued occupational licenses, including aerospace, communications and maritime jobs.

In a statement, Denham said the federal government “should be an example to the states that are looking for ways to improve veteran transitions.”

“America is blessed with the strongest, most capable and professional military in the world,” he said. “Unfortunately, even though many of our veterans have the training to perform a wide variety of occupations, the private sector and even other departments of the federal government do not recognize this training.”

Freshman Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) has spent his first term trying to shrink the size of government — literally.

As chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management, he was behind a recent bill to hasten the disposal of buildings owned by the government that sit vacant, sometimes for decades.

Citing an estimate that the federal government has sold only 82 properties over the last quarter century, Denham said he was “shocked by the waste” he found while crafting the bill.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, February 23, 2012

MODESTO, CA – - Jeff Denham’s campaign for the House of Representatives today turned in petitions with signatures from over 3,000 local voters, more than enough to place his name on the ballot in the 10th congressional district.

Candidates for Congress can have their name placed on the ballot by either paying a filing fee of $1,740 or turning in 3,000 signatures from voters in the district where they are running. It is extremely rare for candidates to gather the 3,000 signatures.

“This outpouring of support from local voters is rarely seen,” said Denham’s campaign consultant Dave Gilliard. “It is indicative of Jeff’s strong position in the 10th district and the enthusiasm for his candidacy. Clearly voters like what they see when they look at Jeff’s background and record.”

Denham is running in the newly drawn 10th congressional district, which includes all of Stanislaus County and a portion of San Joaquin County. Signatures were gathered in both counties, with more than 2,500 coming from Stanislaus and more than 500 from San Joaquin.

Rep. Jeff Denham is a Valley farmer and small businessman, first elected to the House of Representatives in 2010. He lives in Turlock.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Jeff Denham’s bill, the Civilian Property Realignment Act (CPRA), H.R. 1734, passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 259-164. The bipartisan bill implements common-sense policies to help eliminate government waste and save billions of taxpayer dollars, and is now headed for a vote in the Senate, the congressman’s office said in a news release. CPRA will literally shrink the size of government and help ensure savings by selling or redeveloping high value properties, consolidating federal space, maximizing the utilization rates of space, and streamlining the disposal of unneeded assets, according to the release.

“In the face of a $15 trillion debt, it’s time we get serious about eliminating waste and increasing efficiency in our government. My bill, the CPRA, will shrink the federal real property footprint and save billions of taxpayer dollars by selling what we don’t need and better utilizing what we keep,” Denham, chair of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management, said in the release.

(Bloomberg) — The House voted to create a commission to direct disposal or redevelopment of excess federal property that the General Services Administration estimated costs more than $1 billion a year to maintain.

The bill, H.R. 1734, would adopt a process for civilian property modeled after the Defense Department’s base closure and realignment commission process, or BRAC. The House today passed the legislation by a vote of 259-164.

“The federal government has a horrible track record of selling things that aren’t being used,” Representative Jeff Denham, a California Republican who sponsored the bill, said on the floor today. The bill provides opportunities to get rid of properties that have been “sitting for decades,” he said.
